HUDSON, OH- The Orange Lions gymnastics team delivered a record-breaking performance Sunday, narrowly missing qualification for the OHSAA State Meet but cementing their place in program history.
Competing against a field of more than 106 gymnasts, the Lions rose to the occasion and posted a team score of 124.425 — the highest in program history — to finish 11th overall. Though the placement left them just outside a coveted state berth, the milestone score marked a significant achievement for the program and a testament to the team’s growth throughout the season.
Leading the way was standout sophomore Aya Sayah, who turned in one of the day’s top performances on vault with a 9.0, earning an impressive 8th-place finish in the event. Sayah also contributed an 8.050 on bars, 7.8 on beam, and 8.775 on floor exercise, placing 19th in the all-around competition against a deep and talented field.
Sophie Heiser also delivered a strong all-around showing. She scored an 8.5 on vault, good for 19th place in the event, and followed with an 8.025 on bars, 8.475 on beam, and an 8.825 on floor exercise. Her consistent performances earned her a 16th-place finish in the all-around standings, finishing 18th overall among competitors.
The Lions’ depth proved vital throughout the meet. Natalie Abruzzo posted scores of 7.70 on vault, 6.025 on bars, 6.875 on beam, and 7.575 on floor exercise. Dylan Oakley contributed a 7.475 on vault, 5.625 on bars, 7.025 on beam, and 7.5 on floor.
Additional key routines came from Liz Moody, who scored 7.375 on vault, 6.575 on bars, 7.0 on beam, and 6.5 on floor exercise, and Miriam Claypool, who recorded a 7.5 on vault, 6.10 on bars, 6.825 on beam, and 6.8 on floor exercise.
While the Lions’ season comes to a close, Sunday’s historic score signals a bright future for the program. The team not only competed among Ohio’s best but proved they belong in that conversation. Though the state meet will go on without them, the Orange Lions leave the floor with pride, momentum, and a new benchmark that will inspire future squads.
