PEPPER PIKE, OH- A new chapter in Orange High School football history was written Friday night as senior running back Russell Tye became the school’s all-time leading rusher, surpassing a record that had stood for 37 years.
Coming into the game just 10 yards shy of the mark set by Marcus Layton in 1988 — a total of 3,004 career rushing yards — Tye wasted no time. On his third carry of the night, the senior captain broke through the line for a 4-yard gain, rewriting the record books and igniting the home crowd.
Tye finished the game with 42 yards on 14 carries, bringing his career total to 3,036 rushing yards and counting. Though it wasn't his most prolific night statistically, the moment was monumental.
Tye now sits atop a legacy that includes decades of standout running backs, none more revered than Layton, whose record many thought would never be broken. On Friday, Tye made sure his name would forever be remembered in Orange Lion football history.
Congratulations to Russell Tye — Orange High’s new all-time leading rusher.
