PEPPER PIKE, OH- The Orange Lions faced one of the toughest tests of their season Friday night, taking on perennial powerhouse Perry, and ultimately fell 55-14 in a game dominated early by the visiting Pirates.
Perry entered the matchup with a 4-2 record, their only losses coming at the hands of state contenders Kirtland and Chardon. The Pirates showed why they’re among Ohio’s elite, storming out of the gate with five first-quarter touchdowns to take command of the game from the outset.
Orange found some rhythm in the second quarter, putting together two scoring drives before halftime. Quarterback Jonah Frey got the Lions on the board with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Ben Hegyes. Just before the half, Frey connected again—this time with Chaz Rosiles on a 9-yard strike—to cut into the deficit. The Lions trailed 49-14 at the break.
Frey finished the game completing 7 of 13 passes for 61 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The ground game was a bright spot for Orange, as Russell Tye rushed for 131 yards on 16 carries, and EJ Dowdell added 95 yards on 14 attempts.
With the loss, the Lions will look to regroup as they head to Hawken on Friday for their final road game of the regular season.
