CHAGRIN FALLS, OH- The Orange Lions came up short Sunday afternoon, falling to Mayfield 7–4 at The Pond in Chagrin Falls despite a standout offensive performance from Noah Rice.
Mayfield struck first, scoring less than two minutes into the game to take an early 1–0 lead. Orange responded with resilience in the opening period, as Rice tied the game with 5:25 remaining in the first period. Just over two minutes later, Rice scored again, giving the Lions a 2–1 advantage heading into the first intermission.
The Wildcats answered early in the second period to knot the score at 2–2, but Rice continued his offensive tear. With 9:06 left in the period, he completed his hat trick, putting Orange back on top 3–2. Mayfield responded once more, tying the game with just 2:24 remaining in the second period to send the teams into the third locked at 3–3.
The third period proved to be the difference, as Mayfield erupted for four unanswered goals to build a 7–3 lead. Rice added his fourth goal of the game late in the period, but it would be the final tally as the Wildcats skated away with the win.
Despite the loss, Rice’s four-goal performance highlighted a strong individual effort for the Lions in a hard-fought contest.
