CHAGRIN FALLS, OH- The boys wrestling team competed Saturday at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament hosted at Kenston High School, with several wrestlers turning in gritty performances. Highlighting the day was Raphael Duran, who fought back through the consolation bracket to earn a third-place finish and advance to the district tournament this weekend.
Competing in the 190-pound weight class, Duran dropped his opening match to Josh White of Madison High School by a 7-1 decision. Refusing to let the early setback define his tournament, Duran stormed back with a pin over Oliver Thomas of Rocky River High School.
He continued his march through the bracket with a narrow 5-4 victory over Tyson Willingham, followed by a pin of Keagan Cole from Perry High School. In his final match of the day, Duran sealed third place with a strong 3-0 decision over Ethan Kurtz of Kent Roosevelt High School, punching his ticket to districts.
Also earning spots on the district standby list were Henry Jais (113 pounds) and Danny Neal (175 pounds), both finishing fifth in their respective weight classes.
At 113 pounds, Jais opened with a loss to Zack Simmons of Buckeye High School, 17-2. He responded with a pin over Blake Cummings of University School and then dominated Dylan Hill of Norton High School, 18-0. After falling to Simmons again by pin, Jais rebounded to pin Eddie Boehm of Rocky River to secure fifth place.
Neal, wrestling at 175 pounds, dropped his opener to Jackson Bezzeg of Perry by pin. He came back to defeat Parker Pearce of Norton by medical forfeit but then fell to Preston Ware of Buckeye by pin. In the fifth-place match, Neal delivered an impressive 22-6 major decision over Rayaan Khalil of Rocky River to claim his place as an alternate.
Others competing for the team included Jack Johnson at 132 pounds and Andrew Moderick. Johnson fell to Evander Anderson of Maple Heights High School by pin and later lost 16-1 to Hunter Bilbrey of Conneaut High School.
Moderick opened with a pin over Olamide Dalton of University School before dropping a 15-0 decision to Sebastian Tavera of Norton. He bounced back with a pin against Patrick Owens of Edgewood High School but was eliminated after falling by pin to Connor Ahlin of Madison.
With Duran advancing and two wrestlers earning alternate positions, the team now turns its focus to the district tournament, where the postseason journey continues.
